NPAI (Network Provided Calling Line Identification Presentation)

NPAI (Network Provided Calling Line Identification, often referred to as Network-Provided CLI) is the calling-party number inserted by the originating network operator and presented to the called party. Because it is set by the network rather than the originator, NPAI is more trustworthy than user-provided CLIP, and is the field STIR/SHAKEN attests cryptographically.

NPAI in context

Telecom networks depend on Internet-style routing (BGP, DNS, MPLS) for interconnect. Route hijacks and DNS abuse can degrade or intercept signaling, which is why RPKI and DNSSEC are now standard hardening for carrier networks.

Cryptography in telecom spans air-interface ciphers (A5/1, A5/3, ZUC, SNOW, NEA/NIA), transport (IPsec, TLS) and identity (AKA, 5G-AKA, EAP-AKA'). Weak or downgradeable ciphers remain a live risk on 2G/3G fallback.
