Cryptanalysis

Cryptanalysis is the study of how to recover plaintext, keys, or other secret material from cryptographic systems without authorised access. Modern cryptanalysis has produced practical breaks of weak telecom ciphers (A5/2, GEA1) and theoretical advances against widely used ones, and motivates the ongoing migration to AES, modern AKA variants, and post-quantum algorithms.

Cryptanalysis in context

Telecom networks depend on Internet-style routing (BGP, DNS, MPLS) for interconnect. Route hijacks and DNS abuse can degrade or intercept signaling, which is why RPKI and DNSSEC are now standard hardening for carrier networks.

Cryptography in telecom spans air-interface ciphers (A5/1, A5/3, ZUC, SNOW, NEA/NIA), transport (IPsec, TLS) and identity (AKA, 5G-AKA, EAP-AKA'). Weak or downgradeable ciphers remain a live risk on 2G/3G fallback.
