Network Slice (5G Network Slice)

Also known as: 5G slice, End-to-end network slice

A network slice is a logical, end-to-end 5G network instance (RAN, transport, core, and often edge) tailored to a specific service or tenant, identified by an S-NSSAI and managed through NSSF/NSSAAF and orchestrators. Slices share physical infrastructure but must be logically isolated at the control, user and management planes; GSMA FS.40 and 3GPP TS 33.501 define the required isolation, mutual authentication and slice-specific security controls.

Network Slice in context

The mobile core carries subscriber sessions, mobility and policy. In 4G it is the EPC (MME, HSS, S/PGW); in 5G it is the Service-Based Architecture with AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM and the NRF.
