Network Slicing

A 5G network architecture technique that creates multiple virtualized, independent logical networks (slices) on top of a shared physical infrastructure. Each network slice is an isolated end-to-end network tailored to specific service requirements (bandwidth, latency, security, availability). Network slicing enables operators to support diverse use cases (eMBB, URLLC, mMTC) with differentiated quality of service on a single infrastructure.

Network Slicing in context

Telecom networks depend on Internet-style routing (BGP, DNS, MPLS) for interconnect. Route hijacks and DNS abuse can degrade or intercept signaling, which is why RPKI and DNSSEC are now standard hardening for carrier networks.

Cryptography in telecom spans air-interface ciphers (A5/1, A5/3, ZUC, SNOW, NEA/NIA), transport (IPsec, TLS) and identity (AKA, 5G-AKA, EAP-AKA'). Weak or downgradeable ciphers remain a live risk on 2G/3G fallback.
