VRAN (Virtual Radio Access Network)

Virtual RAN refers to RAN architectures where baseband processing is implemented as software running on commercial off-the-shelf servers, typically in a centralised data centre, instead of on dedicated radio-site hardware. vRAN improves resource pooling and upgrade speed, but moves cryptographic operations and subscriber traffic onto general-purpose compute, expanding the attack surface to cloud, hypervisor, and orchestration layers. Strong workload isolation, signed images, and hardware-backed key storage are essential controls.

VRAN in context

The radio access network is where mobile devices attach to the operator's infrastructure. Attacks in this layer include IMSI catching, rogue base stations and downgrade attacks; defenses rest on mutual authentication, integrity-protected signaling and Open RAN supply-chain hygiene.

The mobile core carries subscriber sessions, mobility and policy. In 4G it is the EPC (MME, HSS, S/PGW); in 5G it is the Service-Based Architecture with AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM and the NRF.
