LTE-Advanced (LTE-A)

LTE-Advanced is the 3GPP Release 10+ enhancement of LTE, ratified in 2011 to meet the IMT-Advanced 4G requirements. It introduced carrier aggregation (combining multiple bands for higher throughput), enhanced MIMO, relay nodes, and heterogeneous network support. LTE-A delivers peak rates beyond 1 Gbit/s and is the basis of most modern 4G networks.

The radio access network is where mobile devices attach to the operator's infrastructure. Attacks in this layer include IMSI catching, rogue base stations and downgrade attacks; defenses rest on mutual authentication, integrity-protected signaling and Open RAN supply-chain hygiene.
