CHF (Charging Function)

In telecommunications, the CHF is the 5G Network Function responsible for converged online and offline charging. It receives charging events from NFs such as SMF and AMF over the Nchf service interface and produces CDRs consumed by the operator's billing systems.

CHF in context

The mobile core carries subscriber sessions, mobility and policy. In 4G it is the EPC (MME, HSS, S/PGW); in 5G it is the Service-Based Architecture with AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM and the NRF.

OSS/BSS platforms hold the highest-value subscriber and revenue data on the operator side, are heavily targeted for fraud and insider abuse, and are in scope for NIS2 and the UK Telecoms Security Act.
