BEREC (Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications)

In telecom networks, BEREC is the EU body that brings together national regulatory authorities to ensure consistent application of the EU regulatory framework for electronic communications, including aspects of net neutrality, roaming, and security.

BEREC in context

Roaming and interconnect are where two operators exchange signaling and user-plane traffic. Trust boundaries here are the primary attack surface for location tracking, SMS interception and fraud, which is why GSMA now mandates SEPP with PRINS on 5G interconnect.

Telecom networks depend on Internet-style routing (BGP, DNS, MPLS) for interconnect. Route hijacks and DNS abuse can degrade or intercept signaling, which is why RPKI and DNSSEC are now standard hardening for carrier networks.
