WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)

A family of Wi-Fi security protocols developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to replace the broken WEP standard. WPA introduced TKIP and per-packet keys; WPA2 adopted AES-CCMP and is the long-time enterprise baseline; WPA3 added Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE) to defeat offline dictionary attacks and forward secrecy for personal mode. Original WPA and WPA2-Personal with weak passphrases remain vulnerable to KRACK and offline cracking, so WPA3 is recommended wherever supported.

WPA in context

The mobile core carries subscriber sessions, mobility and policy. In 4G it is the EPC (MME, HSS, S/PGW); in 5G it is the Service-Based Architecture with AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM and the NRF.

Subscriber identifiers (IMSI, SUPI, MSISDN, IMEI) anchor authentication, charging and lawful interception. Any protocol that leaks a permanent identifier is treated as a privacy defect, which is why 5G introduced SUCI concealment on the air interface.
