SSID (Service Set Identifier)

The Service Set Identifier is the human-readable name of a Wi-Fi network, broadcast in 802.11 beacon frames so client devices can discover and select it. SSIDs can be hidden, but hiding them does not provide meaningful security; strong WPA2/WPA3 authentication and encryption do. Duplicate SSIDs are commonly used by rogue access points to lure clients.

Security controls span signaling firewalls (SS7/Diameter/GTP screening), transport encryption (IPsec, TLS, PRINS), identity and access on OSS/BSS, and monitoring at both packet and log level. Controls are audited against GSMA FS.11/FS.19/FS.20/FS.36.

Cryptography in telecom spans air-interface ciphers (A5/1, A5/3, ZUC, SNOW, NEA/NIA), transport (IPsec, TLS) and identity (AKA, 5G-AKA, EAP-AKA'). Weak or downgradeable ciphers remain a live risk on 2G/3G fallback.
