mMTC (massive Machine-Type Communications)

Also known as: massive MTC, Massive Machine-Type Communications

mMTC is the 5G service category for very large numbers of low-cost, low-power, low-throughput devices (target of roughly 1 million devices per square kilometre). It is served today mainly by NB-IoT and LTE-M and, in 5G, by RedCap and future NR-Light profiles. Security concerns include weak or shared credentials at scale, signalling storms during mass reconnects, and the difficulty of patching long-lived field devices.

Signaling protocols carry the control-plane messages that set up calls, register subscribers and route SMS. SS7, Diameter, GTP-C and SIP are the four dominant families, and interconnect exposure of any of them is treated by GSMA as top-tier telecom risk.

Telecom security is written into standards from 3GPP, GSMA, ETSI, IETF and ITU-T. Understanding which body owns which specification, and how they interlock, is essential for both design and audit work.
