BSS (Business Support System)

The software systems and processes handling business operations in telecommunications including billing, customer relationship management, order management, product catalog, and revenue assurance. BSS systems interface with OSS (Operations Support Systems) to enable end-to-end service delivery and monetization.

BSS in context

The radio access network is where mobile devices attach to the operator's infrastructure. Attacks in this layer include IMSI catching, rogue base stations and downgrade attacks; defenses rest on mutual authentication, integrity-protected signaling and Open RAN supply-chain hygiene.

OSS/BSS platforms hold the highest-value subscriber and revenue data on the operator side, are heavily targeted for fraud and insider abuse, and are in scope for NIS2 and the UK Telecoms Security Act.
