5G SA (5G Standalone)

5G Standalone is the 3GPP Release 15+ deployment mode where both the radio access network (gNB) and the core (5GC with AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM, SEPP, etc.) are 5G-native, with no dependency on 4G EPC. 5G SA unlocks the full 5G feature set, network slicing, URLLC, SUCI-based identity protection, SEPP, and the service-based architecture, and is the target architecture for new commercial deployments.

5G SA in context

The radio access network is the layer where mobile devices attach to the operator's infrastructure. Attacks in this layer include IMSI catching, rogue base stations, downgrade attacks and jamming, and defenses hinge on mutual authentication, integrity-protected signaling and Open RAN supply-chain hygiene.

The mobile core is where subscriber sessions, mobility and policy live. In 4G it is the EPC (MME, HSS, S/PGW); in 5G it is the Service-Based Architecture with AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM and the NRF. Core exposure is the difference between a single-subscriber leak and a fleet-wide breach.

To place 5G SA in the wider telecom-security picture, review AMF, Mobile Network, NRF, Service-Based Architecture (SBA) Security, SBA and IAP.
